Professional experience

Dr. Shing Chang joined the department of industrial and manufacturing systems engineering at K-State as an assistant professor in 1991. He holds a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from the National Tsing Hua University, a master's degree in industrial and management engineering from Arizona State University, and a doctorate in industrial and systems engineering from the Ohio State University. Chang served as a department editor for quality and reliability engineering focus issue of IIE Transactions in 2003-2009. He was involved in various activities in the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) as newsletter editor, president elect, and president for the Division of Quality Control and Reliability Engineering in 1994-1997. He has been responsible for the ABET student learning outcome assessment for the IMSE department at K-State since 2000. Chang was elected and served as K-State faculty senate in 2002-2005. He also helped establish the K-State data analytics graduate certificate program in 2016.

Research

Chang’s research area involves various data analytics methods related to quality engineering for manufacturing and health care applications. His recent research topics include statistical process monitoring for big data in manufacturing, quality 3D printing through cyber manufacturing, and entropy-based monitoring to prevent elderly falls using Microsoft Kinect videos and Fitbit health data. Some of his past research projects include: multivariate process monitoring and profile analysis, fuzzy neural applications in experimental design and process control, computer image inspection and statistical process control using wavelet transform, multi-attribute decision making under uncertainty for sustainability and resiliency building design, identifying data driven health care facilities in VHA hospital, and massive data analysis under uncertainty with application to GPS geometric modeling.

Academic highlights

Chang serves on editorial boards of Journal of Quality, International Journal of Advanced Quality Management, International Journal of Six Sigma and Competitive Advantage, International Journal of Information and Decision Sciences, and International Journal of Experimental Design and Process Optimisation. His publications have been cited more than 1000 times with an H-index of 17 according to Google Scholar. His research and education projects have been funded by the National Science Foundation, US Department of Agriculture, US Department of Veterans Affairs, National Institute of Health, Naval Research, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, Kansas Department of Transportation, and Advanced Manufacturing Institute at K-State. Chang was selected as a NASA Summer Fellow in 2004 and won the SME outstanding young manufacturing engineer award in 1997. He helped establish the quality assurance system in Payless Shoe Source for its sourcing operation in 2000.
